What grants are currently available for cavity wall insulation?
Two schemes fund or part-fund CWI in Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales): the Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) and ECO4. Both run to 31 March 2026. Northern Ireland has different arrangements.
What is cavity wall insulation?
Cavity wall insulation fills the gap between your home’s inner and outer walls with insulating material. This helps keep heat in, reduce energy bills, and cut carbon emissions.
Can I get cavity wall insulation for free?
Yes; under the government’s ECO4 scheme, many households qualify for fully funded cavity wall insulation. Some may need to make a small contribution, depending on the property and any extra work required.
Who qualifies for cavity wall insulation grants?
You receive certain benefits (e.g. Universal Credit, Pension Credit).
You are referred through ECO Flex by your local council (for low-income or vulnerable households not on benefits).
Your home has an EPC rating of D–G and a suitable cavity wall construction.
How do I know if my home is suitable?
Most brick-built homes constructed after the 1920s have cavity walls. A free home survey will check wall type, cavity width, and any issues (like damp) before installation.
How is cavity wall insulation installed?
Installers drill small holes in the mortar joints of your outside wall, inject the insulation material, then seal the holes. The process is usually complete in a single day.
Is cavity wall insulation guaranteed?
Yes. ECO4-funded installations come with an industry-recognised 25-year warranty (often from CIGA), giving you long-term peace of mind.
Will it disrupt my home?
Work is carried out entirely from the outside, so disruption inside the home is minimal.
What if my property already has cavity insulation?
If existing insulation is defective, removal and refilling may be possible, but this is assessed case by case. Grants usually cover new or top-up insulation.
How does ECO4 funding compare to GBIS?
ECO4: Best suited for low-income / fuel-poor homes, covering full whole-house upgrades (including cavity wall insulation).
GBIS: Offers insulation support to households in specific Council Tax bands; sometimes requires a contribution.
