First Time Central Heating Grants
First time central heating grants are available for people in off gas areas. Those with a gas connection in the local area can benefit from a brand new gas heating system and A rated boiler. Those that don’t have a local connection can upgrade their heating by using an air source heat pump.
Installing central heating for the first time is a game changer for any home without a proper heating system. Whether you rely on electric heaters, coal fires, or nothing at all, first time central heating brings reliable warmth, lower energy bills, and a more comfortable living environment. Through the ECO4 scheme, Cucumber Eco can offer fully funded central heating systems to eligible homes at zero cost to landlords or tenants.
We’ve helped families and landlords bring modern heating to homes that need it most, creating lasting comfort and energy savings across the UK.
First time central heating grants are perfect for homes without an existing system or with only partial heating. We install energy efficient boilers, radiators, and pipework, transforming how your home feels in every room. Plus, it adds value to your property and improves your EPC rating, helping you stay ahead of future regulations.
We manage the full process, making it as simple as possible for homeowners and tenants alike:

What is a First Time Central Heating (FTCH) grant?
A First Time Central Heating grant helps households that have never had central heating before to install a modern, efficient system. Under the government’s ECO4 scheme, this can include air source heat pumps as well as traditional gas systems (where gas is available).
What if my home isn’t connected to the gas grid?
If there’s no gas supply nearby, you may still qualify. In these cases, ECO4 can fund an air source heat pump system as your first central heating solution. Heat pumps are highly efficient, low-carbon, and work year-round — making them ideal for off-gas homes.
Who qualifies for a First Time Central Heating grant?
You may be eligible if:
Your home has never had central heating before.
You receive means-tested benefits such as Universal Credit or Pension Credit, or you’re referred through ECO Flex by your local council.
Your property has an EPC rating of D–G and is technically suitable for a new system.
What do I get with a heat pump installation under FTCH?
A full package is installed, including:
The air source heat pump unit.
A new central heating system with radiators or underfloor heating.
A hot water cylinder (as heat pumps require one).
Smart heating controls to help you manage your system efficiently.
How does a heat pump save me money?
Heat pumps are up to three times more efficient than traditional electric heating and much cheaper to run than oil, LPG, or solid fuel. By switching, households can save hundreds of pounds a year on energy bills while keeping the home warmer.
Do I need planning permission?
Most air source heat pump installations are classed as permitted development, so planning permission is not usually required. Your installer will confirm this during the survey.
How long does the process take?
After your eligibility is confirmed and a free home survey is completed, installation typically takes three to five days, depending on property size.
What guarantees come with the system?
ECO4-funded FTCH systems are installed by TrustMark-registered installers and must meet PAS 2030/2035 standards. Heat pumps usually carry a 7–10 year manufacturer’s warranty, plus installer guarantees for the heating system.
How does ECO4 funding compare with other schemes?
ECO4: Fully funds central heating (including air source heat pumps) for qualifying households, especially off-gas properties.
Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS): Offers up to £7,500 towards heat pumps for those not eligible under ECO4, but usually requires a customer contribution.
How do I apply?
Get in touch with an approved ECO4 installer. We’ll check your eligibility, arrange a free home survey, and handle all grant paperwork so you can enjoy a brand-new, energy-efficient central heating system at little or no cost.
